What Is Military Appreciation Month?

It seems like every time we turn around there is a trendy new themed month or day to celebrate or honor. Your social media news feeds are often filled with content about anything from Zombie Awareness Month to National Donut Day. Although many of these months and days might be fun, there are a few lesser known days that should grab our attention. Military Appreciation Month is certainly one of those.

In short, Military Appreciation Month is a time for the members of our nation to reflect on the sacrifices that our civil servants and their families make each day to keep us safe.

Military Appreciation in May

The United States Congress established Military Appreciation Month in 1999. They decided that the month of May would forevermore be a time to honor servicemen and women of all ranks and modes of service.

If you’re familiar with some of the other military centered days on the calendar, then it is probably no surprise that Congress picked May. Some of these days include Loyalty Day, Victory in Europe Day, as well as Memorial Day.

Little Known Patriotic Holidays

May 1st is known as Loyalty Day.

This is a time for citizens of the United States to reflect on our country and remember our heritage. The origins of this day can be traced all the way back to 1921. Whether you are a first generation immigrant or you can trace your ancestry all the way back to the Founding Fathers, this day is for you to celebrate your love of this country! Although this holiday is not as widely celebrated as it once was, there are still some communities who host parades in honor of Loyalty Day.

May 7th – 13th is known as Public Service Recognition Week.

As you know, our military men and women operate in service of the public and the greater good. However, there are many other individuals who operate at local, county, and state level that also serve our communities. This week is set aside to commemorate the sacrifices of Peace Officers, Firefighters, and more.

May 12th is Military Spouse Appreciation Day.

Our Soldiers’ husbands and wives also serve our country and deserve a show of appreciation. This holiday is celebrated on the Friday before Mother’s Day each year and its purpose is to thank military families for their support of our service men and women.

Three Reasons Leadership Training Is Essential For Hiring Top Talent

One of the most difficult parts of owning or running a business is finding top talent to fill important positions. Placing bright individuals with a drive to succeed in the most influential areas of your company is key to driving growth, profits, and your company’s reputation. Many business owners and managers focus on things like salary and more time off to acquire the best talent for their companies. While these things are certainly important and cannot be ignored when trying to hire top-notch candidates, emphasizing leadership or professional development training in your company is a great way to set your company apart from other companies that may also offer similar benefits.

Three Reasons You Need A Robust Training Budget To Hire Top Talent

If you want to hire excellent employees who will take your company to the next level, you have to invest money in your current employees and commit to investing in those that you interview early on in the selection process. Here’s why great companies have large training budgets:

Leadership training adds value for the candidate.

Desirable candidates achieve their status of desirability because they work hard and provide value to the organization where they work. These candidates have worked very hard throughout their careers to build their resumes and skill sets because they recognize the value of learned skills for both themselves and the places that they work. For this reason, the most desirable candidates are looking for an employer who intends to invest heavily in their education and training in addition to providing them with an acceptable salary and benefits package. If your company wants to be successful in capturing the best candidates to grow your company, you must communicate and commit (preferably in the employee’s contract) to a certain amount of training each year. This will speak volumes to candidates about the culture of your company and how you show appreciation to your employees.

Leadership training adds value for the hiring company.

Investing in your employees is some of the most productive money that a company can spend. Many organizations view paid training as a service that is provided to their employees and as something that shouldn’t be expected. This view of employee training is backward, unproductive, and a product of a dangerous shift in corporate culture. Paid employee training is a way to make good employees even better while will only serve to improve your company as a whole. This is particularly true in regard to leadership training. Today, the corporate environment is a global one that is constantly changing due to mixing cultures and advancing technology. Training your people to be good leaders with extraordinary skills is a great way to prepare them to compete for your company in an ultra-competitive corporate environment. So, training is not just a way to say “thank you” to your employees. It should be a standard practice throughout your company if you want to compete at a high level.

Leadership training secures a successful succession plan.

Today, many companies are struggling to nail down a firm succession plan while their workforce is also aging fairly quickly. Hiring top candidates is a great way to secure a successful succession plan that will see your company grow long after you or your team of current leaders has retired. In addition, identifying current employees or investing in top candidates that are new employees is a great way to communicate early on that your company is built for longevity. This fact in itself will serve to make desirable candidates more comfortable with your company.

3 Reasons Why Military-Style Leadership Is Great for Business

The US Military has given rise to some of the best and most notable leaders in history. This is no coincidence. Our military has a sure-fire formula for creating leaders who focus on service rather than glory. Many of these great leadership skills or traits can be used to great effect in private industry. If your company is suffering a leadership or team unity crisis, a military-style leadership training course could be just the thing that your people need to get them on the track to success.

How Military-Style Leadership Training Can Improve Your Business

The quality of leadership within your company can set the tone for massive growth or terrible disasters. Here’s how military-style leadership training can help your business improve:

Better Team Building

Military-style leadership training is very team focused. The military focuses on teamwork and team processes. If you’re experiencing push-back among team members, military-style leadership training and exercises can serve to build trust and companionship within your company. A leader who is trying to manage a team full of people who do not like or trust one another is going to have a very hard time making progress and increasing profits for your company.

Increased Confidence in Abilities

The military focuses on the excellence of execution and foundational knowledge. That is why our government invests so much in the training of our men and women in uniform. Perfection is expected. A military-style leadership course can reinforce your managers’ leadership skills with practical application exercises that will build confidence among your company’s leaders. A confident leader is much more likely to make good decisions that point your company toward growth.

Service Centered Leaders and Teams

Another leadership characteristic that the military drills into its leaders is the concept of service to both peers and subordinates. Many times, a leader can experience push-back from his or her team because they might not trust their assigned leader. A great way to build trust is by serving. If a team knows that their leader has “got their six”, then they are much more likely to produce successful results that drive growth within an organization.

Where to Start with Military-Style Leadership in Your Company

Thank You Veterans – Carnival Cruise Line – Veteran Appreciation Ceremony

Last week I had the opportunity to take a cruise on the Carnival Cruise ship Breeze out of Galveston, TX for a 7 day Caribbean cruise that was fantastic!  The staff, the weather, the excursions all were outstanding!  What I found to truly be amazing though was that Carnival conducted a Veteran Appreciation Event on Friday – that was truly moving and amazing!   Carnival had an hour Veteran Appreciation Event at the main Ovation Theatre led by Mike Pack the Cruise Director and it was again – outstanding!

Forward March Inc Announces Innovative Partnership with Socialeo LLC

Today, Forward March Inc, an industry leading talent management and leadership training company that specializes in veteran talent and corporate-military hybrid style leadership training, and Socialeo LLC, an innovative online marketing and content management startup, announced a strategic partnership between the two companies in which Socialeo will support Forward March’s online sales and marketing efforts.

About the Partnership

The partnership will afford Forward March Inc with a more robust online presence and powerful marketing solutions to grow their business while expanding their national footprint. In addition, FMI’s partnership with Socialeo will provide FMI’s customers and target markets with more readily available information about FMI’s military talent management services, Elite Leader training events, corporate conferences, career advisement programs, and more. The partnership is a tremendous opportunity for FMI to provide expertly-trained veterans with post-service employment while filling a void in the corporate space for highly-qualified professionals.

“FMI is very excited to announce our partnership with Socialeo. They have an outstanding reputation of excellence in social media and marketing. FMI is ready to grow in 2018 with Socialeo taking point. Because Socialeo’s founder, Rhiannon Beard, has connections to the military and those that serve, her company knows what it will take to help FMI grow and convey the essence of what military service is all about as well as the impact military members and those that serve can have on employers in various industries and society as a whole,” said Paul Volpe, President and Partner of Forward March Inc

“I am excited to work with Paul and the highly-qualified team at Forward March in such an innovative capacity. Socialeo’s mission is to expand FMI’s national footprint via inventive online marketing campaigns and strategies. Together, our companies will partner to provide valuable resources for both veterans and corporations while positively impacting FMI’s clients and talent pool members,” said Rhiannon Beard, President and CEO of Socialeo LLC

About the Industry

As a whole, the unemployment rate in the United States is declining due to many factors like an aging workforce. As a result, the number highly-qualified employees that are available for hire is also declining. In fact, one study of the coming shortage of skills and talent in America found that “nearly 7 million people in key managerial, professional, and technical jobs are expected to exit the workforce.”  This trend is making experienced professionals harder to find for corporate America than they have been in decades. However, Forward March Inc offers a valuable solution to the talent and leadership dilemmas that are facing businesses and corporations in the United States today. For this reason, communicating the value of post-service veteran employment and providing invaluable leadership training to employers in the U.S. is essential to foster economic growth for individual companies and the country at large.
