May was a big month for Team FMI – Joplin as we kicked off our partnership with the City of Joplin, MO and the Joplin Welcome Home Veterans Program.  On May 15th, Joplin Mayor Michael Seibert recognized former military members and May Military Appreciation Month with a Mayoral Proclamation.  Representatives from 10 Veteran organizations, active, reserve and National Guard members were also in attendance for this memorable event.  The City of Joplin values it’s Veterans and is leading the charge in support of Veterans, and is great place for Veterans and their families.

Welcome to Joplin, Veterans!

May – National Military Appreciation Month

May – National Military Appreciation Month

Join the celebration!  What are you doing for National Military Appreciation Month?

National Appreciation Month started as a simple idea; to gather America around its military family to honor, remember, recognize and appreciate those who serve and have served all while knowing its history. Legislated twice, this idea continues to evolve experiencing increased national attention & recognition!

In April of 2004, more comprehensive legislation was passed by unanimous consent of both Houses of Congress as H. Con. Res. 328 solidified May as National Military Appreciation Month.  It also reminds the President of the United States to issue annual proclamations calling Americans to recognize this special month through appropriate ceremonies and events.

Most intriguing to National Military Appreciation Month success is that it’s built from the ground up by a handful of volunteers with genuine desire to motivate public patriotism, awareness and support for our troops, veterans and their families.

Our military continues to play a major role in the development of our country chronicled through history of unbending honor, dedication to duty and genuine love of country. Alarming is younger generations who distance themselves by lacking awareness of, nor value the service given by our family Americans; many of whom are of the “Greatest Generation” that we see now.  Schools rarely teach crucial military events that turned the course of history evident as they continue to lose connection with our own American history.  Names like Pearl Harbor, San Juan Hill, Civil War, Continental Army, 38th Parallel, Berlin Airlift, Tet Offensive and Normandy continue to loose their significance within the general American population; particularly our future generations – our youth.  Because of this, we now combine American Military History Month into the month of May encouraging educators to develop lesson plans that will highlight the history of each military branch.

As most holidays commemorating historical military events become marketing avenues to distract our focus on its original purpose; this month is necessary to remind us of the sacrifices and the history we as Americans have been privileged to participate in throughout the past 237 years.

Due to military deployments worldwide protecting our national interests, Americans are asked to serve. And employers are asked to accommodate these lengthy absences adding demands on the employees. Our military represents the highest caliber of professionalism, patriotism and technology and all we ask to willingly risk their lives on a moments notice.  So family Americans; lets willingly and openly recognize their contributions and sacrifices of their families!  Thank you!

GOD BLESS AMERICAS ARMED FORCES – OUR FOUNDATION TO FREEDOM!

The San Antonio Arsenal built in 1859 furnished arms and munitions to frontier forts across Texas and was occupied by the confederates during the Civil War. Throughout World War II, the arsenal shipped more than 337 million pounds of munitions overseas to keep our men and women fighting. Although it was officially closed in 1949, the building remains steeped in military and Texas history. Oh, if those walls could talk!

Although munitions are no longer shipped from the site, it has long been home to another command, control, and logistical operation; it serves as the corporate headquarters for HEB. One of the largest independent food retailers in the nation, HEB provided us the opportunity to train their corporate recruiters on hiring and retaining top military talent. It was a great honor and privilege to train with an outstanding organization on such an historic venue.

While HEB has always been committed to our Nation’s military both in hiring practices and community outreach, we gave them the tools and training to make their veteran hiring program even better. In our Phase I customized program, we trained their highly motivated corporate staff on in the following areas:

  • Department of Defense Overview
  • Business Case for Hiring Veterans
  • Common Misconceptions about Veterans in the Workplace
  • Understanding Military Lingo
  • Overview of the DD214
  • Veteran Training Resources
  • Veteran Hiring Laws, Rules, and Regulations
  • Veteran Hiring Strategies
  • Interviewing Military
  • Supporting the Nation Guard and Reserve

A commitment to hiring veterans is great; learning how to do it effectively is excellence in action! We are helping HEB take it to the next level. What can we do for your organization?

Dancing With Our Heroes is a unique event that pairs Military Heroes (wounded warriors and veterans) with local Fred Astaire dance professionals to compete at a fund-raising Gala for the Fisher House Foundation, the USO and Goodwill Good Careers Academy on May 24th, 2015.

Dancing With Our Heroes was born out of the idea that dance can be an effective form of healing, physical therapy and confidence building. In 2012 Fred Astaire Dance Studios and FMI’s Operation Outreach worked to bring together professional dance instructors with Wounded Warriors at the San Antonio Center for the Intrepid. The results were amazing and Dancing With Our Heroes was born.

Since 2012 Dancing With Our Heroes events have been held in cities across the nation. On May 24th San Antonio will host its first Dancing With Our Heroes Gala. FMI’s Operation Outreach has a mission to make this Dancing With Our Heroes Gala the biggest and the best yet. We are an organization of veterans with a passion for helping veterans.

Join us on our mission to support Wounded Warriors, their families and our nation’s heroes – our veterans.
