Veteran’s Day!

American-Flag copy
On November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day following World War I stating: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…” Since that November our nation has celebrated Veteran’s day. You can learn more about Veteran’s day here.

Today, is a day to put your flag out but its also a day to put yourself out there. Make it a point today to thank a Veteran for his or her service. Our nation is great because of the sacrifice that so many have made to insure our freedom. Today is a great day to call family members, friends, or acquaintances and say thank you for making our nation great.

Celebrate Veteran’s Day with your children. Teach your children about the holiday through local events and various activities. Military.com has some great ideas on how to do this here…  CNN has a nice article on how you can do more on Veteran’s Day here…

Here at Forward March Inc. we would like to take a moment to salute our veterans.

Veteran Employment Weekly Roundup

FMI Vet Employment Weekly RoundupVeterans make great employees, as we are always thrilled to point out here on our blog. Army Gen. Martin E. Empsey the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff highlighted this fact said in a New York symposium of Veterans on Wall street. Take a minute to go read more about what he had to say here…

Veterans are filling needs for top job qualifications according to a recent article in the Houston Chronicle. Read more here… If you are a veteran or transitioning military person then you may want to check out the employers and industries in Houston referenced in this article.

While we love San Antonio, home of Forward March Inc., we know that many other cities have a lot to offer veterans and transitioning military. The Washington Business Journal just posted an article ranking Houston and San Antonio numbers one and two in the 2014 Best Places for Veterans: Mid-career rankings. While Texas seems to dominate the list with cities in the numbers 1, 2, 5 and 9 positions, there are other cities that are making great strides with regards to veteran employment.

November is Military Families Month but its also Celebrate America’s Military Month here in San Antonio. The San Antonio Chamber of Commerce has a list of events for the entire month that you can check out here… There are a wide variety of events but keep your calendar open for the Hiring Red White and You event on November 13th if you are a veteran looking for a job.

If you are a veteran Starbucks and Amazon are looking for you! Starbucks has pledged to hire 10,000 veterans and their spouses within the next five years. Market Watch has a really good article with information about companies such as Starbucks, Amazon and Walmart who are hiring veterans. They also have some other great links for veterans in the article you can read here…

As we often repeat here on this blog, we are veterans committed to helping veterans. We would love to put a veteran into a position we are trying to fill with one of our customers, but at the end of the day, what is most important to us is that a veteran gets a great career opportunity.

Start Your Own Veteran Owned Business

vetownedbusiness

According to the Small Business Association Office of Advocacy veterans make up approximately 9.1% of business owners. Veterans have a long standing history of leaving or retiring from military service and venturing out as small business owners and entrepreneurs.

Today there are more opportunities for Americans to start their own business than ever before. There are a multitude of ways that you can start your own business from franchises and licensing opportunities to buying into existing businesses and sales distribution markets, just to name a few. Starting a home-based-business is also always an option and many people exercise this option with varying results. The reasons for business failure are varied but one thing that helps ensure success is a good business model and sound business planning.

Many opportunities touted in the “sharing economy” and in the world of multi level marketing (MLM) promise great financial futures but the statistical reality is that few people who embark in these ventures ever make the income they dreamed of making when they started. These kinds of business “opportunities” have been in the news again with the public commitment of Uber to bring 50,000 vets onboard. You can read about what is going on with that here.

If you want to avoid the pitfalls of becoming another statistic in these markets you can mitigate your risk. Take your time, and research the business you are getting into. If a business opportunity sounds too good to be true, conventional wisdom dictates that it probably is. However, no harm comes from doing your homework and researching opportunities. Entrepreneur magazine has some great advice on how to research a business opportunity. You can find their informative article here.

Veterans who wish to go down the road of entrepreneurship have a lot of opportunities today to learn, get mentored and find proven methods of business success. If you are interested in joining the ranks of veterans who own their own business then you will definitely be interested in some of the outstanding opportunities available to you right now. Many of these opportunities are free for veterans! While many of these opportunities are in the San Antonio area we encourage veterans to look into their local Chamber, SBA, and university locations to find out if programs like this are being offered in their location.

We posted a while back that the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce is “re-booting” their entrepreneurial boot-camp for military veterans. You can learn more about that here.

Veterans who want to join the SBA and start down the track of entrepreneurship should check out the latest article on the San Antonio Business Journal site. The SBA is extending their fee waiver program for veterans through 2015!

Veterans and transitioning military interested in starting their own business should also check out the San Antonio Small Business Development Center at UTSA. This program offers a number of benefits including special veterans assistance.

Its November 4th, You Know What That Means!

Flags around small town courthouse on Memorial Day

All over our great nation today people are enjoying one of the greatest aspects of our freedom, our ability to freely elect representation. For over two centuries the United States of America has been a beacon for the rest of the world standing for freedom. Sadly today, many people choose not to participate in any of the civic duties that we all share as citizens of the United States and this includes voting for our elected officials.

Since our nation’s first War for Independence (1775–1783) countless men and women have given their lives in the service of their country, our country… your country. Our freedom as a nation is paid for by the blood of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, laying down their lives for something greater than themselves. Judging from the election trends there is still about 40% – 45% of the population that does not participate in the electoral process. Our democratic process is best served by robust voter participation. Get out and vote today!

It goes without saying that today there are a great number of issues that voters must consider when casting their ballot. It is not the intention of Forward March Inc. to tell anyone how to vote or who to vote for.
